How to Install a Wall Light Properly
2024/05/09

A well-placed wall light has the power to shape the way an area looks and feels, it needs to fit well in the space – both physically and stylistically – and provide the right amount of light based on how you use the area. When installing wall sconces, there are a few guidelines we'd share them below.

Bedroom

When it comes to the bedroom, it's all about the right height based on function. Bedroom sconce lights are usually mounted around 5-6 feets above the ground, this allows the lighting to be comfortably directed towards the reading area. However since bed height varies this may not always be the case, just sitting in bed and making sure the sconce at your eye level.

Secondly, the fixture needs to be close enough for you to easily reach the switch or adjust the light if the sconce has an adjustable swing-arm or multi-functional.

Bathroom

The most commonly used places for wall sconces in the bathroom are above the mirror and at both sides of the mirror, the fixtures are used as task lighting.

The bathroom sconce light fixtures are best to be installed between 60"- 65" from the floor on either side of the mirror, its height should land just around eye level to prevent unflattering shadows or harsh glares. If you decide to place the vanity bar light above the mirror, we recommend installing it between 75"- 80" above the ground depending on the height of the mirror. This ensures optimal light coverage for daily routines.

Kitchen

Kitchen wall lights are especially crucial in this area of the house, they are often used with ceiling-mounted fixtures to complete the space. A good rule is to measure 60" from the floor or a minimum of 24" from the countertop, this provides ample light for food prep and other tasks comfortably at any time of the day while ensuring enough head clearance and avoiding bumping into the sconces.

Entryway or Stairway or Hallway

The sweet spot is typically between 60" and 72" from the finished floor, this puts the light source around eye level for a comfortable experience. For even illumination, space them 6 feet apart horizontally. Remember to adjust spacing depending on the layout of your house to ensure balanced light coverage and avoid dark spots.
