Ceiling lights, or ceiling fixtures are mounted flush with the ceiling, they are opposed to hanging lights like pendants or chandeliers. While certain rooms can make use of ambient lighting from other types of fixtures, every home has areas where ceiling lights are the best (and sometimes only) fixture for the job.

Flush mount ceiling lights and semi-flush mount ceiling lights are two primary types of ceiling lights. Flush mount ceiling lights are fixtures installed with little or no space between the body of the light and the ceiling. When to Use Flush Mounts

A good rule of thumb is to use flush mount fixtures in rooms that have 8 feet ceilings, so that the fixtures can produce beautiful illumination. If using flush lights in rooms over 8 feet ceilings, the room can not have enough lighting because the fixture is positioned too far above the floor. If using semi-flush lights in rooms with low ceilings, the room will have a safety hazard.

When to Use Semi-Flush Mounts

Semi-flush fixtures bring the light lower and have the added benefit of throwing light up onto the ceiling, which can make the whole room feel brighter. As semi-flush mount lights are mounted using a chain or a rod, there are a number of situations that make them a more useful and efficient choice for your room. It's a perfect choice for rooms with 9 feet and 10 feet ceilings.

When to Choose a Hanging Light

For rooms with ceilings higher than ten feet, hanging fixtures like pendants and chandeliers are better options. These fixtures bring the light lower, allowing it to fill rooms with tall ceilings more effectively.
