How are bedside lamps measured?

If you're planning to stand a lamp on a bedside table, then the lamp should be the same height as the table plus two or three inches. That puts it at the ideal height to illuminate without getting in your eyes. Next, you should be able to lie in bed and easily turn the light on and off.

As regarding to the width, the widest point of the bedside lamp should be 1/3 the width of the table. Thus the lamp won't take or leave too much space, it will bend in perfectly.

How to choose the right lampshade?

The right lampshade balances the lamp. Generally, the height of the lampshade should be approximately two-thirds the height of the lamp's body, measuring from the bottom of the lamp to the base of the light bulb. The width of the lampshade should be approximately twice the width of the widest part.

White or off-white lampshades let the most light through, but colored lampshades are a great way to add an accent to your décor. As for the shape, drum shades are the current trend, but you can't go wrong by matching the shape of the shade to the shape of the base.

Do you have to have matching bedside lamps?

Although matching lamps on the bedside tables are the most common way to go, you can create unique interest by buying two different styles of table lamps of similar design or color depending on the overall style of your lighting and décor.

For example, you can place two different modern style lamps on either side. The fact that they are both modern lamps will create unity, without having to purchase two of the exact same model. The same goes for bedroom table lamps that are contemporary, farmhouse, rustic, etc.
